Group A action continued today with Bangladesh and New Zealand, coming into the match both teams had 1 point each as their matches were abandoned due to rain. With England already advancing to the second round, Australia, Bangladesh and New Zealand all have a chance to also advance. Coming into this match Bangladesh and New Zealand both have 1 point after two games. It’s a must win match for both teams. The only way for one of them to advance to the next round is if England beat Australia in their match up. If the Aussies come out victorious against the England, they will be the next team to advance from Group A.
New Zealand won the toss and selected to bat first. The Bangladeshi bowlers did a brilliant job to help restrict New Zealand to 365-8 in their 50 overs. Openers for New Zealand got off to a good start until the 8th over where Luke Ronchi will be removed by Taskin Ahmed, New Zealand now 46-1. Martin Guptill didn’t last much longer as he was trapped for lbw by Rubel Hossain, he departed on 33 runs. Giving the New Zealand back some momentum were Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor. Williamson will go on to contribute 57 runs until he was run out with the combination of Shakib Al Hasan and Mosaddek Hossain. Taylor ended on 63 runs. However, Mosaddek Hossain caused some destruction to the New Zealand’s middle order. He bowled just 3 overs and claimed 3 wickets for just 13 runs. This was surely the major key to restricting New Zealand to a greater total.
Got to give great credit to the Bangladesh team as they displayed exceptional work in the fielding and bowling department today.
On to the Bangladeshis innings, what a horrific start they had. New Zealand bowler Tim Southee crippled the top order batsmen. Leading batsman for Bangladesh Tamim Iqbal didn’t get a chance to display his talent today, as he will be trapped for lbw with the 2nd ball of the 1st over bowled by Tim Southee, he went for a duck. Destruction will continue as Sabbir Rahman nicked one to the keeper, two runs later Soumya Sarkar was also trapped lbw. With just 5 overs being bowled Bangladesh were 3-12. Tragedy will hit again as Mushfiqur Rahim was bowled by Adam Milne, Bangladesh now 4-33.
Hope was restored to Bangladesh’s innings as middle order batsmen Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah got them back into the game. These two put on a record partnership of 224, highest partnership in ODIs for Bangladesh. Once they got into groove there was no stopping. Playing some tremendous disciplined cricket, the pair rotated the strike, also getting the occasional boundaries and maximums. The running in between the wickets was just excellent. Mahmudullah and Shakib both got centuries. Shakib was bowled by Trent Boult 47th over, by the the damage was already done, Shakib departed on a well played 114 inclusive of 11 4s. Mahmudullah remained not out on 102 as Bangladesh’s victory came in the 47th over.
Although Bangladesh got the victory today, they will now sit and wait for the result between the England and Australia match. England will need to win against the Aussies if Bangladesh is to move on to the next round. Australia and England play match 10 of the tournament on June 10th 2017. 10:30/9:30 GMT.
