This year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) started on Friday 4th August at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St.Lucia. Playing the first match of the tournament were home team St.Lucia Stars formerly known as the Zouks and Trinbago Knight Riders.
Batting first were the Stars, batting at 81-5 in the 13th over. They managed to get 132-9 after their 20 overs, topping the scoring was Andre Fletcher who made 26 inclusive of four 4’s. Young Pakistani bowler Shadab Khan and captain Dwayne Bravo were the pick of the bowlers for the Knight Riders as they each picked up 2 wickets.
Sunil Narine and Brendon McCullum opened for the Knight Riders, losing Narine in the first over for a duck. With the New Zealand pair of McCullum and Munro, both destroyed the Stars bowlers throughout the innings. Both batsmen got to half centuries, after McCullum was dropped on 48 runs by Kyle Mayers. The Knight Riders reached their target in 10.4 overs winning by 9 wickets. McCullum made 58 inclusive of 2 4s and a massive 7 6s, Mum to ended with 66 inclusive of 7 4s and 3 6s. Man of the match went to Pakistani Shadab Khan for his remarkable bowling ending with figures of 15-2 after his allotted 4 overs.
The second encounter with these two teams took place on Monday 7th August at Queen’s Park Oval, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. In to bat first once again were Stars who got off to a shaky start. Spin bowlers for the Knight Riders, Shadab Khan, Sunil Narine and Kharry Pierre kept the Stars run rate down, with their combination of 12 overs just 48 runs were scored and 3 wickets were lost. Final total after 20 overs, 118-9. Kevin Cooper picked up 3-21 and Andre Fletcher topped scored again with 40 runs for the Stars.
Moving on to the Knight Riders innings, Shane Shillingford ripped through the Knight Riders top order batsmen, Knight Riders struggling at 6-75 after 9.3 overs. Hope was restored for the Knight Riders as Shadab Khan and Javon Searles put on a 45 runs 7th wicket partnership. Victory came for the Knight Riders in the 16th over, needing 15 runs to win, Searles blasted 2 sixes and a four to lead his team to victory in front their home crowd. Khan who ended on 30 runs, also picked up a wicket which gave him yet another man of the match award. The Knight Riders reached their target in 15.4 overs ending on 120-6, Shillingford ended with figures of 4-22.
CPL action continues on August 9th with Trinbago Knight Riders playing the Jamaica Tallawahs at the Queen ‘s Park Oval, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
